Course Description:
‘Queer theory’ describes a network of critiques emerging from a legacy of activism and looking ahead to utopian futures. The analytical tools queer theory provides as a mode of close reading and critique makes it a relevant contemporary approach to literary theory. Beyond reading for queer characters and desires in texts, queer theory is a tool for seeing below the superficial, supporting readings that are unconventional or deconstruct normative assumptions by attending to both the rhetorical power of language and the broader structures of knowledge formulation. Textual or discursive construction of knowledge is a key theoretical approach of queer theory with important implications for literature. Queer theory embraces a multidisciplinary and diverse set of influences, methodologies, questions, and formats; it empowers novel readings of the world, and worldly readings of the novel, opening up new ways of viewing life and text.
Structured thematically yet also roughly chronologically, the course begins with a unit introducing the core subfield of queer critique, then builds upon those concepts to present key branches of queer theory for the literary scholar: queer ecologies, queer geographies, queer temporality, and queer diaspora theory. Students will read canonical queer theorists including Judith Butler, Carolyn Dinshaw, David Eng, Michel Foucault, and Donna Haraway, and also have the opportunity to explore emerging new work from scholars such as Lauren Berlant, Mel Chen, and Gayatri Gopinath. The final unit applies to the theory to three literary works from James Baldwin, Chinelo Okparanta, and Chi Ta-wei. The course is designed with a balance of canonical and current queer theory scholarship and literature to train students both in the field’s foundational literature and ongoing debates. The assignments are designed to support students in producing an informed, academically rigorous paper worthy of publication.
No prior knowledge of queer theory is necessary, and the course is open to students outside of DFLL. |

Course Objectives:
As a graduate seminar, the course aims to help students develop analytical reading, thinking, and communication skills in preparation for their MA theses or PhD dissertations and further academic careers. The course builds upon a presumed foundation in literary analysis to teach queer theory critique specifically as it relates to literary studies. This focus gives them confidence with relevant applications, while engaging with broader queer political and scholarly debates allows students to gain familiarity with the foundational texts and discourse. By the end of the course, students should have the theoretical foundation and sufficient exposure to representative literature to write confidently about reading literature with queer theory, and have the experience of having produced a high-quality work of academic research. |

Requirements:
Completing the assigned reading and actively participating in the course will be essential for accomplishing course objectives and performing well in the course. Students will be evaluated on lively class participation, weekly reading (including submitting thesis statements about the reading certain weeks), one group presentation on a piece of theory, one paper (scaffolded to include an abstract, first version, peer review, and final version), and one symposium presentation. |

Assigned Readings:
Students should purchase the three novellas we will be reading: James Baldwin’s Giovanni's Room (1956), Neon Yang’s The Ascent to Godhood (2020), and Chi Ta-wei’s The Membranes. The instructor will provide the other assigned readings, mainly academic articles or excerpts of academic monographs. In the process of writing their papers, students are strongly encouraged to read further on their specific topic. |
